Hamilton County is the third largest county in New York State and the only one completely within the Adirondack Park. With a full-time population of only 5,000, the county has few of the services that most areas rely on such as doctors, pharmacies, hospitals or urgent care centers. It also has the highest unemployment rate in the state; averaging about the 1930’s depression level for the overall U.S. Most jobs in the county are seasonal and provide few, if any, benefits.
With this in mind, the Church of the Transfiguration prioritizes its expenditures heavily for relief efforts for those who need basic home supplies, emergency assistance and seasonal help. Please take a look at each of the tabs in this section describing what we do to help our neighbors here in the North Woods.
Almost 70% of our annual budget goes into these efforts, but more is always needed and appreciated. If you visit us for church services in the summers, please bring donations for our Pack Basket, a simple way to make a big impact in many Adirondack lives. Your donation during services helps maintain our building and its gardens, but may more likely go to our community's annual contribution the the Community Action Agency of Hamilton County.
We also promote educational excellence in Hamilton County's schools and beyond, helping local and regional students to receive the best education possible and to achieve college degrees that will help them help their communities in the future. Scholarships of up to $1000 are available to students attending the Long Lake and Indian Lake schools as well as the Russell Barrowman Scholarship for any technical student from Indian Lake School. These opportunities make a real difference in the lives of the students receiving them and in the life of the Adirondack Park.
